The Smackdown Is Here!

30 Mar

Launched: The Immerse or Die Science Fiction Bundle

If you’re a regular reader, you’ve seen my posts on Jefferson Smith’s Immerse or Die book reviews. If not, let me tell you that Smith is a tough audience to please. Every day, he gets on his treadmill with an independently published science fiction or fantasy novel and sets off on a 40 minute journey. When he runs into problems in the book–things that break his immersion in the story–he marks it as a WTF. Three strikes, and the book is out. If you look through past reviews at IOD, you’ll see there are a lot of books that don’t make it past 10 minutes; very few make it to 40, and when they do Mr. Smith reads them all the way through to the end.

The best of the best–the books that keep him engaged all the way through–have been bundled together in the past as limited edition sets through StoryBundle, and I’ve been pleased to have my books included in all 3 of the past bundles.

Now Jefferson is trying something new–bundling 8 of the best science fiction books that have crossed his treadmill and making them available through major booksellers.

That’s right–you can get 8 treadmill-tested science fiction novels for just one price. If you bought these e-books separately, they would total around $30, but now you can get them all for just $5.99. That price is going to go up in a few weeks, so why not grab the bundle now at the launch price?

I’m pleased to say that my cyberpunk noir novel, Strictly Analog, is among the bundled books. If you haven’t already read it, this is a great way to get your copy and seven other solid reads to go along with it.

Buy the Smackdown at Amazon

Buy the Smackdown at Kobo

If you’ve been hanging around here for a while and already have all the books in the bundle, you have my deepest gratitude. Could you do me a favor, though, and share this announcement with friends who you think might be interested? Hitting one of the share buttons would also great.

All right…treadmill or not, start reading!

Eddie Royce is an up-and-coming science fiction writer with a terrible secret: he cheats.
He knew he’d get caught, of course. Eventually. But not like this. When disaster finally strikes, it strikes big, and Eddie is confronted by the worst person imaginable: his idol, the SF master, Chester Blackwood.
To Eddie’s great surprise, however, Blackwood has secrets of his own, and instead of outing him, the master story-teller quickly embroils Eddie in a real-life mystery of time travel, beautiful women, and Hollywood gangsters. But then Blackwood disappears, so if Eddie wants to keep both the fame and the girl, he’s going to have to do the one thing he’s never been able to get right before: plot his way out of a crisis.
And the stakes if he fails? The very future of science fiction itself.

It’s another open and shut case for Ace Stubble, lawyer for the undead and disembodied. At least that’s what he thinks. When Cordelia Dearborn—a ghost with a shady past—hires Ace to rid her home of pesky, freeloading descendants, Ace figures he’ll have no problem collecting his fee. But there’s more to this case than a cranky old ghost and houseful of unwanted people.
Everyone in the Dearborn family—the living, the dead, and the mentally ill—has a secret or two, and Ace can’t avoid getting caught up in all of them. It doesn’t help that Cordelia’s beautiful granddaughter seems willing to do anything to keep from being evicted. It’s all such a mess that no one—neither the living nor the dead—seems aware that there’s bigger trouble brewing in the house. Ace Stubble has faced danger before, but is he ready for what’s living in the basement of the Dearborn estate?

Derek Chandler had it all—the education, the promising future, the beautiful wife—but a tragic accident changed everything and his life now stands in ruins. Haunted by the ghosts of what might have been, Derek tries to lose himself in his new job, but what begins as a minor academic mystery soon unravels, leaving him with the burden of a second truncated life: that of long-vanished science fiction writer, Kichiro Nakamura.

Convinced that finding Kichiro is somehow the key to finding his own peace, Derek is drawn into a frantic search of modern and post-war Los Angeles as he tries to reconstruct the shattered kaleidoscope of American and Japanese cultures. And the key to everything just might be the beautiful—and very suspicious—tattoo artist, Yuki Kamikaze.

New Audiobook Release: The Somniscient

5 Jan

When Dreams Are Big Money, Who Will Be Allowed to Sleep?

I’m pleased to announce the release of my latest audiobook, The Somniscient. This one is narrated by Steven Jay Cohen, who also handled the narration on Strictly Analog and Take Back Tomorrow.

The Somniscient is a cyberpunk story set in a not too distant future in which sleep has become the new currency.

Here’s the Amazon description:

When reformed dream hacker Nix Nighthawk’s sleep chip malfunctions, he is forced to seek help from a world he is trying to avoid – his old friends in the pirate dream network. But that world has changed, and Nix soon finds himself at the center of a complex plot to overthrow the vast corporation that controls every aspect of society. Betrayed by his lover, his friends, and even the technology that defines him, he has to choose: go back to living his safe and controlled existence, or be the hero and join forces with the revolutionary known only as The Somniscient.

In book format, The Somniscient has received solid reviews. Jefferson Smith, author of the Finding Tanya series and chief reviewer at Immerse or Die book reviews had this to say about it:

“Gritty and believable, The Somniscient has more twists than a network wiring schematic and an ending that will make you question what you’re doing with your life.”

If reading print books is something you don’t always have enough time for, audio is a great alternative. I hope you’ll take a moment to check out The Somniscient or share this announcement with your audiobook-loving friends.

It’s the third Immerse Or Die Story Bundle that you’re about to miss out on.

Over the last few weeks, smart shoppers have been taking advantage of the latest set of books being offered at StoryBundle, all with the Immerse Or Die seal of approval.

Immerse Or Die is the kind of thing readers love and writers dread–a tough and honest system for reviewing books that has very low tolerance for the kinds of mistakes that give indie fiction a bad name. The books that have made it into this bundle are all winners, survivors of the dreaded IOD treadmill, which means no confusing POV shifts, no distracting character inconsistencies, no poor editing. Instead, you get 8 solid science fiction and fantasy novels–and because this isn’t just Immerse or Die but also Story Bundle, that means you get to set your own price for these books.

all-covers-large3-copy

And You Can Also Give the Bundle as a Gift to Your Favorite SF/F Reader.

Could it possibly get any better? Probably not.

But after December 22, the bundle goes away. Don’t Miss Out!

Already grabbed your IOD StoryBundle? You have my gratitude, and I hope to hear about the books from you. If you would do me the favor of sharing this post so others don’t miss out, I’d be even more grateful.

The Perfect (and Inexpensive) Gift for the Science Fiction/Fantasy Fan in Your Life

2 Dec

It’s That Time of Year Again…

Time to start digging through lists of books on Amazon and elsewhere, trying to find something for the science fiction and fantasy fans on your Christmas shopping list.

And as you go slipping down the rabbit hole of “People Who Searched for This Item Also Bought….” pages, you ask yourself, “Isn’t there an easier way?”

And, of course, there is.

That’s because the good people at StoryBundle have put together an amazing set of Sf/F books for you to download at the price YOU set. Too good to be true? Nope. That’s what StoryBundle is all about.

Better yet, the books they’ve put up have all been through the rigorous ImmerseOrDie review system where fantasy writer Jefferson Smith literally puts books through their paces and pulls the plug on anything that causes him to lose immersion in the story. Bad editing, confusing narrative, character inconsistencies…all the things that make a potentially great story disappointing: there is no mercy at ImmerseOrDie. And the books that survive? They get gathered together in a bundle like the one being offered at StoryBundle now.

So from now until December 22, you can get these 8 books for the price you set, all with the ImmerseOrDie stamp of approval. And it’s easy to gift these books to anyone on your list when you check out.

Here Are The Books You’ll Be Able To Get:

all-covers-large3-copy

Black Ocean: Mission Pack #1, by JS Morin
The first four installments of a rollicking space adventure serial. Plus wizards. Just when the space hijinx start to settle down, the wizard drops in to kick the story on its ass. If you like your adventure quarrelsome, audacious, and unpredictable, then the good ship Mobius has got you covered.

The Somniscient, by Richard Levesque
Have you ever wanted to be able to control your dreams? Maybe even write the script? But if that became possible, who would bother to write their own? In this chilling exploration of the near future, an entertainment technology giant dominates every facet of human life: from the dreams you dream, to the apps you use to talk about them. They even control the very currency of exchange. So the burning question now is: when dreams are big money, who will be allowed to sleep?

Bartleby and James, by Michael Coorlim
Start with a Sherlockian detective and then double down on the science by giving him a sidekick who’s a little less Watson and a lot more Tesla. Throw in an intriguing villainess to lead the two on a merry chase, and you end up with something that seems entirely of that era: a mystery that invites you to tea and then remembers to send a thank you note afterward. Think of it as “A Curious Gentleman’s Guide to the Age of Wonder.”

Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree, by SA Hunt
One of the promises of indie fiction is that it can bring us stories that just don’t fit into conventional molds, and this is one of the books that actually delivers. In fact, this was the very first book I read that convinced me that indie authors could go toe-to-toe with the majors. If you’re looking for a bold new world of fantastical adventure that harks back to Lovecraft and L’Amour rather than Tolkien and Lewis, then this is the two-fisted, gunpowder smackdown that will take you there.

Amber Fang, by Art Slade
Miss Amber Fang is a smart and funny vampire librarian, raised with a strict ethical code: we only eat murderers, dear. And that, combined with her exotic vampire physiology, makes her the perfect candidate for an entirely different line of work: government assassin. Nobody ever suspects the librarian.

Second Skyn, by Damien Boyes
We’ve all seen the story of the hero whose consciousness is backed up on a computer drive and later re-animated into an unfamiliar world of the future. But what if he’s reanimated the Tuesday after his death and charged with the murder of his wife? And then, what if he’s reanimated again, only this time under the secret identify he used for surfing porn, and given the chance for revenge? I’ll tell you what happens: awesome happens. Two versions of the same man, both investigating the same murder from different ends. And only one of them can be allowed to survive.

Warchild: Pawn, by Ernie Lindsey
Consider a society where three fundamental forces are in seemingly perfect balance. Where do you pin your allegiance? To the local warlords who are trying to maintain order? To the secret societies who are trying to save the old world, but are still mired in the beliefs that caused the collapse in the first place? Or to the young idealists who don’t understand any of that, and just want a chance to build lives for themselves without having to choose sides? No matter how you slice it, someone has got to lose.

Malus Domestica, by SA Hunt
Real horror, to me, is when terrible things happen to people I know and like. Especially if I can clearly see the long, slow, but inevitable arc of their lives as they begin to slide straight toward the distant wood chipper. Hunt masterfully shows us an early taste of what’s at stake and then settles in to let us get cozy with the family before he brings out the knives. And when he does, the results are chilling. Forget the hags of Eastwick and Oz. If you want your witches to be really scary, put ’em right there in your home town and have them serve cookies to your kids.

“Foundlings is one of those books that readers will love but booksellers will hate, because it totally refuses to sit neatly in just one category. It dances delicately between mystery, period drama, and cultural exposé, and gives more than a passing nod to geek culture. But what really reached me was the haunting, poignant romance that plays out softly, over decades of louder crashing history. No, it’s not a seller’s book. Foundlings is definitely for readers. And they will treasure it.”Jefferson Smith, Immerse or Die book reviews and author of the Finding Tanya series

Fans of William Gibson, Jonathan Letham, and Richard K. Morgan will enjoy Strictly Analog by Richard Levesque.

What’s a private detective to do in a future where nothing is private? That’s Ted Lomax’s problem. In the new California, a corporation runs the government, electric cars have drive tones, and a new technology keeps everyone constantly connected to the Internet. Almost everyone.

Disabled in California’s war for independence, Ted is locked out of the new tech. Living on the fringes of society for years, he’s found a way to turn his disability into cash: finding clients who need their info kept off the grid.

But when his daughter is accused of murdering her boyfriend–an agent in California’s Secret Police–Ted has to dig himself out of the hole he’s been in. To save his daughter, he ventures into a shadow world of underground hackers, high-end programmers, and renegade gear-heads, all of whom seem to have a stake in California’s future.

It soon becomes clear it’s about more than one dead agent. Solving the case might save his daughter. And it might get him killed. And it just might open the door to secrets surrounding the attack that almost killed him eighteen years before.

One thing’s certain, though. Ted Lomax will never be the same.

Watch the Book Trailer:

“The story is told through Lomax’s first-person perspective, and the narration by Steven Jay Cohen is suitably world-weary. Lomax is a tired, cynical man and Cohen’s slow and steady performance is a solid match to Levesque’s words…The production quality is crisp and clean, making Strictly Analog a smooth and easy listen. Those looking for a fresh mystery story with a dash of science fiction would do well to check this one out, and Lomax has all the makings of a mid-21st Century Columbo.”–Michael Hicks, AudioBookReviewer.com
